Hippie Primavera, Video on Flash Cooking
16 June 2010 by Jean JohnsonFlash cooking continues to attract people to my work. I’m glad because it’s the heart of what my measure free, seasonal, sustainable message is about.

So here you go.
In these vids I show how to
- Turn the burner on high with a puddle of water.
- Put your rustically chopped veggies in, in the order of which takes longest to cook Build your flavor using the sacred quartet: oil, vinegar, salt, pepper
- Pair with protein and carbs
- And bring on the goodies to make Plain Jane fare rock your socks!
It’s as simple as that, and the clean-up is too. Plus I talk about eating seasonally, thrift, health, and how delicious this food revolution really truly is. Hope you come along. We’re having a blast…

Cool, Kelsey. Holler if I can ever sign a book for you. Here’s to treating our mama hens like any mother deserves.

Jean – I don’t know why it took me sooooooo long to find you – a kindred spirit
(not to mention a child of the 60s and a NAU alum:) I am watching your videos – bringing back memories.
Yesterday I took some absolutely tasteless plums, pitted them, chopped them up, put them in a Pyrex bowl and put them in my solar over (this is the Sonoran Desert:). Later in the day I brought them in, added a shake or 2 or maybe 3 of organic cane sugar. When my husband tasted them he could not believe how good they were and asked how much sugar I used. I couldn’t tell him. He kept pushing for something exact – no way could I tell him. I said what I wrote above. He finally gave up asking and simply ate the entire bowl of plums.
In the meantime – remember that ad for some kind of potato chip? Something about not being able to eat just one. Well, I decided I couldn’t buy just one of your cookbooks so I ordered both the first and second. I will buy the 3rd in the trilogy when it is published. I absolutely love what you are doing with food. Simplicity cooking = marvelous food.
As for the vinegar and oil = my grandmother kept a pair of cruets on the table 24/7. One for vinegar and one for oil. Recently my MIL gave me her set as I did not have my own. This is how I am using mine – on the table with balsamic vinegar and olive oil – LOVE IT!
Thanks for bringing back real food and honest cooking.

Lindy, Thanks for your lovely note. I used to live in the desert as well. Anyhow, we are clearly on the same wavelength here, and you’ve inspired me to actually get some cruets the next time I’m at the thrift store.
Nice to meet up and hope we continue to swap kitchen stories. All best, Jean

Hi Jean. I watched your flash cook video and realized I have been using too much water as a puddle. I was boiling my veggies. Glad to have that cleared up, Iris

Cool Iris. Glad to meet up in the hood too.
Either way. es, it’s the puddle of water thing, as in a puddle sized for your cooking vehicle–adding more if things start to stick and such.
